Don’t assume you are safe from the common cold just because it’s summer. On the contrary, many people have a higher chance of getting sick during this time of year when compared to the fall and winter. But there are some simple steps you can take to boost your immune system, reduce the risk of illness and ward off the Summer-Time Cold.
Cut Back on Sugars
Sugar affects nearly every major system in the body, including the immune system. People who consume a large amount of refined sugars are usually more likely to become ill. This is why it’s a good idea to take a long hard look at your diet, cutting back on processed/refined sugars (fruit sugars are okay).
So, how much sugar is “too much” for one day? There’s really no easy answer to this question, as health officials do not list sugar in their recommended daily allowances. However, most experts say you should consume no more than 40 grams per day. And “High Fructose Corn Syrup” is the worst offender.
Numerous studies have shown that exercise actually boosts the immune system. Of course, this is just one more reason why you should stay active this summer, as it will reduce your risk of getting ill. Whether it’s going for a jog around the neighborhood, lifting weights at the gym, or just doing some jumping jacks in your home, make it a point to exercise for at least 30 minutes each day. Yoga is also a great healthy activity and one of my favorites!
Eat More Fruits and Vegetables
As the saying goes, you are what you eat, holds true in the realm of health and wellness. If you’re looking to boost your immune system this summer, try eating more fruits and vegetables. This will up your intake of key vitamins and antioxidants, offering an invaluable boost to your immune system.
Take a Vitamin C Supplement
Will vitamin C miraculously prevent you from getting sick? Probably not, but several studies suggest that it can improve the function of the immune system. And when your immune system is more active, it’s able to ward off foreign invaders with greater ease.
